From Static Access to Adaptive Identity: How Identity Works in a World of Change

Samantha Holstine

Abstract:

Identity risk rarely announces itself. It accumulates quietly as permissions linger, roles shift, and access expands beyond its original intent. Most organizations grant access once and rely on periodic reviews to catch problems later, but in modern environments, identities, systems, and permissions change constantly. As teams grow, contractors rotate, and cloud services multiply, access models that were once accurate drift out of alignment, often without triggering alarms.

How do you manage access when nothing stays still? How do you reduce risk when identity itself is in motion? This session introduces adaptive identity and explains how it works in practice, reframing identity and access as a continuously evaluated system rather than a one-time configuration. By focusing on signals, context, and change, it highlights why static access models fail and how continuous evaluation surfaces exposure earlier before it becomes an incident response.

Adaptive identity provides a clearer way to reason about identity risk, detect access drift, and reduce security exposure in environments that are inherently unstable.
