Seeing radio waves on a budget

Abstract:

Visualizing and mapping radio emissions is a fascinating field. It can reveal hidden transmitters, unmask unauthorized access points, and pinpoint sources of interference. It can also reveal secrets about outer space! You might assume this technology requires specialized hardware and huge budgets, but in fact you can get started for under $50. I’ve been using outdated satellite TV hardware to create radio imaging systems for a few years, and have developed simple code for several common products. I’ve also been developing code for commercially-available satellite antenna rotors like the Discovery Drive.

This talk will discuss some of the things you can see by mapping the radio spectrum into a human-visible image, how to do so with minimal equipment and experience, and what we can learn by doing it. We’ll look at some hardware options like RV satellite antennas, security camera mounts, and commercial antenna rotors. I’ll discuss various frequencies and antenna designs, including some 3D-printed options. I’ll also show examples of some applications such as Wifi / mobile networks, satellite networks, sensor and IoT systems, and old-school two-way radio.

I grew up on an island in Alaska, studied IT security briefly in college, got distracted by GIS mapping, then drifted into semi-professional dumpster diving. I’ve salvaged such discarded items as a zoo monorail train and a NATO radar dome. I run a mid-size Youtube channel (Saveitforparts) where I rebuild, re-purpose, hack, or otherwise mess with random junk. I consider myself an expert in very little, but OK-ish at a lot of subjects.
