The Resilient Node: Community Surveillance Self-Defense for Democracy
Abraham Judisch
Abstract:
In “The Resilient Node,” Abraham Judisch makes the case that our dependence on big tech and telecom infrastructure is not just a personal privacy problem, but a community vulnerability. This talk presents a practical framework for building a mobile security stack and community communication system that reduces dependence on exploitable infrastructure and increases resilience when those systems fail.
Attendees will walk away with a concrete, layered approach to surveillance self-defense: from GrapheneOS and degoogled app ecosystems to prepaid SIM strategies, anonymized networking, private communications, and off-grid mesh networking via Meshtastic/LoRa. The talk also highlights key community organizations including the ACLU, National Lawyers Guild, and EFF as essential partners in building and maintaining resilient democratic communities. The overarching message is one of responsibility and stewardship: your preparedness is a gift to the people around you, and your compromise is a risk to them.
