Just about everything ends up in a dumpster eventually, including hardware that would have been limited to militaries and governments just a few decades ago. I'll be discussing how to find free satellite equipment, how to modify it, and a few things you can do with it. We'll see some example data available from US, Russian, and European weather satellites, as well as US military satellites. I'll discuss opportunities for eavesdropping on sat phone traffic or pirating communications satellites. We'll also discuss some unique satellite services like Blockchain and Wikipedia from space.
Gabe Emerson grew up on an island in Alaska, studied IT security briefly in college, got distracted by GIS mapping, then drifted into semi-professional dumpster diving. Gabe salvaged such discarded items such as a zoo monorail train and a NATO radar dome. Gabe Emerson runs a small-to-medium Youtube channel (Saveitforparts) where he rebuilds, re-purposes, hacks, or otherwise messes with random junk. Gabe Emerson considers himself an expert in very little, but OK-ish at a lot of subjects. Between his office day job and backyard duck ranch, he is also writing a book on forgotten railroads. In his spare time he likes to dig tunnels under Wisconsin.
